Functional Hallux Limitus

Whitney CMO Functional Hallux Limitus

A First met cut-out allows for a more normal range of motion.

The first step for improving first ray function associated with functional hallux limitus is to produce a negative cast with a properly aligned first ray. This may be accomplished through manual first ray repositioning with plantarflexion of the 1st metatarsal segment along withdorsiflexion of the hallux during the neutral position casting technique.

To further allow for first metatarsal plantarflexion the Aliplast material is removed until the blue poron material is exposed. Depending on the desired depth of the metatarsal head cut-out, additional poron material may be removed. The orthotic is then covered with the material of choice.
